Understanding what's actually happening in your body
Standard GP blood tests are designed to rule out disease — not to identify the kind of functional imbalances that make you feel unwell when everything looks "normal" on paper.
Functional lab testing goes deeper. It looks at how your body is actually performing — your hormone rhythms, your gut ecosystem, your mineral balance, your genetic tendencies — so we can build a treatment plan based on your specific physiology, not educated guesswork.
At Hābu Health, I use four key tests depending on what your symptoms and history suggest. Not every client needs all four. I'll recommend what's relevant for you.
Testing
The most comprehensive hormone test available
DUTCH Complete — Hormones & Stress
The DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) gives us a complete picture of your sex hormones, stress hormones, and how your body is metabolising them — something a standard blood test simply can't show.
It maps your full cortisol pattern across the day, your oestrogen and progesterone metabolites, melatonin, adrenaline, and key organic acid markers for neurotransmitter function and nutrient metabolism.
This test is particularly useful if you're experiencing:
-
Disrupted sleep or waking between 2–4am
-
Fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest
-
Mood changes, anxiety, or low motivation
-
Perimenopausal symptoms with "normal" bloods
-
Suspected HPA axis dysregulation (burnout)
Collection is done at home using a dried urine kit — no needles, no clinic visit. Results are processed by RN Labs (Australia).
HTMA — Minerals & Heavy Metals
What your hair reveals about your mineral status
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) uses a small sample of hair to assess your mineral levels and ratios over the past three months — giving us a longer-term picture of your mineral status than blood can provide.
Mineral balance is fundamental to energy production, thyroid function, nervous system regulation, blood sugar stability, and detoxification. It also identifies accumulation of heavy metals like mercury, lead, and aluminium that can quietly disrupt how you feel and function.
This test is particularly useful if you're experiencing:
-
Persistent fatigue or low energy despite good sleep
-
Thyroid symptoms with inconclusive blood results
-
Blood sugar irregularities or weight that won't shift
-
Anxiety, poor stress tolerance, or low resilience
-
History of amalgam fillings or heavy metal exposure
Processed by Nutripath (Australia). Collection is a simple at-home hair sample.
Microba Gut Microbiome — Gut Ecosystem
The deepest look at your gut health available
The Microba gut microbiome test uses next-generation DNA sequencing to map the full ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms living in your gut — with far greater accuracy than older stool tests.
Your gut microbiome influences hormone metabolism, immune function, inflammation, mood, and how you respond to food. During perimenopause, the microbiome shifts significantly — which is why so many women start reacting to foods they've always tolerated, or find their digestion changing in ways that don't make sense.
This test is particularly useful if you're experiencing:
-
Bloating, irregular bowel habits, or digestive discomfort
-
New food intolerances or histamine reactions
-
Skin flares, joint inflammation, or immune reactivity
-
Low mood or anxiety with a digestive component
-
A history of antibiotics or gut-disrupting medications
At-home stool collection kit. Processed by Microba (Australia).
DNA Nutrigenomics — Your Genetic Blueprint
Understanding how your genes influence your health
DNA Nutrigenomics (via Nutrigenomix) analyses specific gene variants that influence how your body processes nutrients, responds to exercise, metabolises hormones, manages inflammation, and handles stress.
This is a one-time test — your DNA doesn't change. But the insights it provides shape every protocol I build for you, because knowing your genetic tendencies means we can work with your biology rather than against it.
This test is particularly useful for:
-
Understanding why standard approaches haven't worked for you
-
Optimising nutrition and supplementation to your specific needs
-
Identifying methylation issues (including MTHFR variants)
-
Long-term health planning and prevention
-
Women who want the most personalised care possible
Simple cheek swab. Results are permanent and can inform your care indefinitely.
How testing works at Hābu Health
Testing is always recommended as part of a consultation — not as a standalone purchase — because the real value isn't the test itself, it's the interpretation and the treatment plan that follows.
My Comprehensive Hormone Health Package includes:
-
Full initial consultation (60 min)
-
DUTCH Complete test + postage
-
Review consultation to interpret results and guide your treatment plan
Package investment: $785
Pricing for individual tests and other testing combinations is discussed during your free Wellness Call or initial consultation, where I can recommend what's actually relevant for your symptoms.
Please note: functional test costs are in addition to consultation fees and vary by lab. I'll always be transparent about costs before you commit to anything.
Not sure which test is right for you?
You don't need to figure that out before we speak. Book a free 15-minute Wellness Call and I'll tell you exactly what I'd recommend based on what you're experiencing — and why.
All testing is organised through your consultation. No test is ordered without clinical context.
