There are a variety of chemicals within plastics. The chemicals are added to assist plastic to be more resilient to sunlight or heat, have flexibility and to make them pretty colours. By 2050 there would have been at least 2 billion tonnes of added chemicals to plastics. Some of these added chemicals can become harmful as they are released into the environment and they do not always breakdown thus affecting animals by building up high levels in their system.

The chemicals from plastics are released into the environment from manufacturing and usage and once the plastic becomes a waste product.




A lot of common products contain chemicals such as Bisphenol A (BPA) which is used in the lining of can goods, baby and water bottles and hard clear plastics. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is used in adhesives, glues, thinners, paint and varnish removers, aerosol paints and lubricating oils. Phthalates make the plastic become flexible such as food packaging, beauty and skin care products and vinyl PVC. Toluene can be found in paint thinners, nail polish, inks and glues. Benzene can be found in pesticides, rubber lubricants, dyes, detergents and synthetic fibres.
